Thank you Moses and Barbara for your unrelenting advocacy. The idea of growing babies in labs fills me with horror, as does knowing how these children will be used and treated and have their feeling ignored once they are born.

So true. None of us remembers that moment of change from intrauterine to extrauterine life, but few believe we begin at birth. Even the posthumous child, born after the death of their mother, does not lose their place in the dynasty. There is as yet no virgin birth, no synthetic foetus devoid of consanguinity. Artificial wombs, extracorporeal pregnancy, in-vitro gametogenesis, synthetic human entities with embryo-like features, and embryos made from skin cells are possible but still in the future. Those of us not created through assisted reproductive technologies spring from carnal loins. And all of us, no matter our conception, are tellurian, formed from viscous blood and lineage.

This is an amazing examination of the power of language used around human adoption to diminish the experience of the woman and the child and make it culturally acceptable and even lauded to traffic human babies and children. Thank you for raising consciousness in this way! I will eagerly watch for the next discussion.

I do think the language we use around human adoption is a form of networked misdirection. We have a guest post by Dr Alison Ingram on the use of adoption language coming up next Friday.
